- גִּמְגֵּם(Pilp. of גמם) (to peel, scrape; trnsf., cmp. הֲסַמ II, חָכַךְ) to hesitate, stammer, to speak with an expression of uncertainty or of scruple. Kidd.30a אל תְּגַמְגֵּם ותאמר לו that thou need not hesitate in answering him; Sifré Deut. 34. Ber.22a היה מְגַמְגֵּם למעלהוכ׳ (Ms. M. a. Rashi מג׳ וקורא) was speaking hesitatingly over (as the Amora of) R. Judah Ib. b מג׳ וקורא he should read in a hesitating manner (rapidly murmuring); Y. ib. III, 6c bot. התחיל מג׳ בה he commenced stammering over it (hesitating to pronounce the Divine Name). (Cant. R. to VII, 1 מתגמגם, transpos. of מתמגמג, v. מָגַג.
